runecarving

Runecarving is another side to rune magic. It is the skill in attuning items to runes instead of people. Generally only metal items have the durability to withstand the power of a rune. Most swords can handle two runes, assuming the weapon is made of steel. Most other weapons can handle one, assuming they’re at least partially steel. Fully wooden weapons can rarely withstand the power of a rune.

Runic armor has to include solid plates at least big enough to put a rune into. Breastplates are the best armor to place runes into, but anything with plates will do. Metal bracers are the most common augment to lighter armors for runecasters who don’t want (or can’t afford) the weight of full plate armor.

Once a rune is attuned into an item by a runecarver anyone can use the item. It is rumored that powerful runecarvers can get more out of runic items, but for the most part the item works equally well regardless of familiarity with the rune(s).
